「シーラカンス 毛利武士郎記念館」は、かつての毛利のアトリエを改装して2015年に正式にオープンしました。
そもそも、毛利に黒部移住の転機をもたらしたのは、1983年富山県立近代美術館で開催された「現代日本美術の展望 一立体造形」展で毛利を担当した学芸員 柳原正樹（1952-2021年、黒部市出身）でした。柳原によれば、毛利は常々自分が亡くなったあとは、このアトリエをだれか若い作家に使ってもらいたいと話していたそうです。その遺志を受けた柳原は、2006年と2007年に毛利を偲んで「辛夷忌」というグループ展を開催しました。そして、2015年の北陸新幹線開通に併せて記念館としてオープンさせました。
「シーラカンス毛利武士郎記念館」では、2015年以降、毎年4～5回程度の展覧会やイベントを企画しています。また、第一室の記念室には、作家の作品の他に、マケット、図面、株式会社七彩工芸時代に制作された小物、制作と並行して行われた《最後の審判》の模刻リーフなどの手仕事による作品等が、アトリエの雰囲気を残しつつ、空間に心地よく展示されています。
このアトリエの意匠は毛利が自ら担当しました。収納と展示が同時に行える可動式の壁面、作業机、展示台からも作家のこだわりを垣間見ることができます。
黒部に移り住んだ一人の彫刻家が、栗寺のアトリエで没するまでのおおよそ12年間、未知の世界を追求する仕事を続けました。
本当の芸術家の姿を、私は幸運にも身近に知ることができたのだと思います。 毛利武士郎の世界を皆さまに知っていただけるよう、ご遺族とともにアトリエを記念館にし、たくさんのご協力をいただきながらお手伝いをして、2024年で10周年になります。

The Coelacanth – Bushiro Mohri Memorial Museum was officially opened in 2015 after renovating the former studio of Mohri.
The person who supported Mohri’s turning point for moving to Kurobe was Masaki Yanagihara (1952-2021, from Kurobe City). He was the curator of the A Panorama of Contemporary Art in Japan – Sculpture exhibition held at The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama in 1983. According to Yanagihara, Mohri had always said that after his death, he would want his studio to be used by young artists. Responding to Mohri’s wishes, Yanagihara held a group exhibition titled Kobushi-ki in 2006 and 2007 in memory of Mohri. Coelacanth was then opened in 2015 to coincide with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, a high-speed railway line connecting Tokyo with the Hokuriku region.
Since its opening, Coelacanth has been hosting around four or five exhibitions and events each year. In addition to the artworks, various handiworks are also on display sitting comfortably in the first room, the Memorial Room, which still has the air of the time of Mohri. They include objects created by Mohri during the period working with Nanasai, as well as maquettes and drawings, plus the relief sculptures made based on Michelangelo’s The Last Judgement.
Mohri designed the studio himself. The movable walls that can be used for both storage and display, the work desks, and the display plinths, all give a glimpse of the artist’s attention to detail.
A sculptor who moved to Kurobe and continued his work in his studio in Kuridera to pursue the unknown for around twelve years until his death.
I was fortunate enough to be able to sense the true nature of an artist so closely.In order to allow everyone to encounter the world of Bushiro Mohri, together with his family, we turned his studio into a memorial museum. With the generous support from many people, 2024 marks the tenth anniversary since it opened.
